On the eve of International Women’s Day on March 8, the Regional History Museum in Stara Zagora is presenting the exhibition “The Magic of Hand Embroidery”, the institution said on its website.

The exhibition features hand-embroidered motifs and traditional Bulgarian patterns on tablecloths and decorative runners from the second half of the 20th century.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the elegance and creativity of a wide variety of motifs created through different colours, outlines and techniques, woven into unique works, the organisers said.

Embroidery is an art through which Bulgaria’s ancestors conveyed messages of health, love and prosperity. Traditional patterns contain coded symbols that were part of everyday life and the cultural traditions of Bulgarians.

The embroidered motifs include plant, animal, human, symbolic and geometric elements, all highly stylised.

The exhibition opens today and will run until March 30.
