Welcome to Bulgaria Today, the English-language podcast of Radio Bulgaria, on May 1, the International Workers’ Day, hosted by Kostadin Atanasov, Rositsa Petkova and Elizabeth Radkova.

First, in our festive podcast, we are to tell you about the arsenal of freedom in the April Uprising and how cherry trunks overcame steel. In the absence of weapons in their drive for freedom in 1876, the Bulgarians were so motivated that they created wooden cannons to confront the regular and modernly armed Ottoman army.

Next, in a fast-changing technological world, education needs to keep pace, giving young people the knowledge and skills they need for the future. STEM education, which brings together science, technology, engineering and mathematics, is one way of doing this, helping students develop their potential through hands-on problem-solving.

In highlights of Bulgarian Musical Culture, we bring you “A Bulgarian Rose” and the story behind it. More than just one of composer Dimitar Velchev’s best-loved songs, it has become an unofficial anthem-especially for Bulgarians living abroad. You will hear it in its original, unforgettable performance by Pasha Hristova, a young artist whose life was tragically cut short.

Have an enjoyable listen!
