Today’s parliamentary agenda includes amendments to the Consumer Protection Act and the Judicial System Act. Members of Parliament will also debate new rules for the election of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The first bill, submitted by “Progressive Bulgaria”, expands the powers of the Commission for Consumer Protection, including by doubling the fines that the regulator can impose. The prosed amendments also extend the validity of the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria, effective from 8 August, when it is due to expire, thereby also extending the ban on unjustified price increases without economic justification.

A new concept of a “fair price” is also introduced, defined according to a methodology developed by the Ministry of Economy and approved by order of the Minister of Economy. The sponsors of the bill clarify that the aim of the law is to ensure “transparency, verifiability, and protection against unjustified and speculative price increases during a sensitive economic period.”
