Georgi Markov won the European title in the Greco-Roman up to 60 kg category at the 2026 U17 European Wrestling Championships in Samokov. In the final, Markov won against Cristiano Leibzeit from Germany. The match ended 1:1, but the Bulgarian triumphed after scoring a point first, the Ministry of Youth and Sports announced on its Facebook page.

With this success, 52 years after Georgi Markov's Olympic triumph in Munich 1972, his grandson, who bears the same name, has now reached the top of a major championship. On the way to the title, the talented athlete defeated Samvel Tonoyan (Armenia) 6:4, and then prevailed with technical superiority over Russian Mikhail Stepanov within 43 seconds in the second half. In the semi-final, Markov won against Artyom Zhelobkov (Ukraine) with decisive 8:0.
