Bulgaria’s population has fallen by more than 2.1 million since 1990

“While the world’s population continues to grow, Bulgaria is facing one of the most severe demographic crises in its modern history.” This was stated from the parliamentary rostrum by MP Ivan Yanev of “Progressive Bulgaria” on the occasion of World Population Day observed on July 11.

The MP cited official data showing that Bulgaria’s population currently stands at just 6,423,207 people, while at the beginning of 1990 the figure exceeded 8.6 million. According to him, within the span of a single generation, Bulgaria has lost more than 2.2 million citizens.

“These are not just figures. Behind them are depopulated villages, closed schools, empty kindergartens, labour shortages and entire regions that are slowly but steadily losing their vitality,” the MP stressed.

In his words, Bulgaria needs a long-term national policy aimed at restoring the economic vitality of the regions, creating conditions for quality and well-paid employment, and giving young people the confidence that they can build families, raise their children and shape their future in the country.
