Cyclists will take to the streets of the Bulgarian capital Sofia this evening for a protest ride under the slogan “I want to ride a bicycle in Sofia.”
The protesters will set off at 7:30 p.m. from the National Palace of Culture in central Sofia, with the procession ending at the Sofia Municipality building at 33 Moskovska Street.
The organizers are calling for better-connected and safer cycling infrastructure and for Sofia to become a city where cyclists, pedestrians and motorists can coexist safely and peacefully.
They are also protesting recent checks by authorities and warnings of possible sanctions against cyclists who ride responsibly and safely in parks. “Restricting cycling through parks without providing a safe and realistic alternative does not solve the safety problem,” the organizers said.
At the same time, they point out that genuine safety problems in the parks are receiving no attention from the municipality or police, despite reports being submitted. These include cars driving and parking on park paths, dangerous riding of electric motorcycles, and high-speed e-scooters.
